I call these mixtapes because I know if I grew up in that era of making mixtapes for your crush, I would've made so many. I love curating music, creating and discovering vibes, and I think that comes from my father. He was Jamaican and a music producer for Black artists and Stevie Wonder was the sound of my childhood. My connection to music is in my soul. I find myself like my dad even though I've lived my whole life without him. This is probably the largest influence on my interest in music, so if you're looking for music that's good because it's technically advanced you should look somewhere else. I'm not qualified for real music theory-- I'm just collecting songs that sound nice to me!
Growing up in the 2000s-2010s in America, rock and rap shaped my music taste too. Muse guitars riff in my head and the drums of nearly every rock band beat inside me. I learned how to play the conga as a kid and in college I learned taiko. Now, I practice my freestyles along to the beats of the music I listen to. My current favorite genres are neo-soul like Smino and rap like Megan Thee Stallion. What gets me is a beat you can feel in your body and relatable lyrics, whether it's about how powerful pussy is or how depressing society can be. I create playlists that evoke specific emotions or center a specific concept. Because of that, I end up listening to a variety of artists and often come across hidden gems. I hope I can put you on to new faves.
