Our system perpetuates violence because it was built from violence. When we talk about ancestry, bloodline, history… there is no point where our subject is free of the past that made it. White people love to say they’re African with their 0.1% DNA, but ignore much more recent history that lives inside them. Slavery and colonization, these are actions whose consequences will never wash away. I think climate change is our century’s sin too, completely fucking our habitable earth with unpredictable, yet inescapable, negative repercussions for us all.
What we can do now is remove abuse from ourselves, all levels of the self, as much as possible. Stop feeding into the disease one generation at a time. Pick what works and leave what doesn’t. Maybe, we might reach a day when the parts we’re picking from are free of those maligned influences. I think this is possible because not everything in our world is a product of colonization. There are so many of us also born out of resistance. A person with my life and genetic composition would never have existed of years ago. It is thanks to those that pursued love over obedience to dominating culture that I am here. For those like me, our true lives are our biggest contribution to the process of decolonization.
